As part of the TH114: Introduction to Theatre class, students are required to participate in one hour of practicum work for the Theatre Management Graduate Students working in marketing/publicity, or Front-of-House.

Open positions/opportunities are posted routinely on the large red callboard across from Room 105 in Rowand-Johnson Hall.

  1. Posters and Flyers: Students are given a set of flyers or posters and a location list. Students then visit each location listed and hang the poster/flyer in an available display area. NOTE: If hanging in a non-campus location, ALWAYS ask the manager for permission first.
  2. Playbill Stapling: To save on the growing cost of printing and prepping the playbills we ask 114 students to help put the programs together for each show.
  3. Ushering: Ushering is a great way to get your hour of credit in. Not only do you take care of your practicum credit, but you also get to see the show for FREE! Specific dress codes, duties, etc are posted on the sign-up sheet.
  4. Chalking: Chalking is a quick, creative way to get your practicum hour. Students are given two pieces of chalk, a set of chalking rules, a script to follow, and a map. Students then visit the highlighted campus area and chalk on the approved sidewalks.

How to Make Sure You Get Your Practicum Credit

  • If you sign up for it, YOU are responsible for remembering the date, time, place, and dress (if applicable).
You will NOT be reminded of your scheduled practicum assignment. You will ONLY be contacted before your scheduled practicum assignment if the opportunity is canceled.

  • Punctuality is a must. If you show up late for your practicum assignment, Theatre Management reserves the right not to grant you credit, in which case you will have to sign up for another practicum.

  • When you sign up for a practicum, you must list accurate and complete information. This includes name, email, and phone number. Failure to do so can disqualify you from receiving credit.

  • For posters, flyers, and chalking, it is your responsibility to return to the Theatre Management office by the deadline listed on the SIGNUP FORM to get your credit. Failure to do so may result in refusal of credit.

  • For Ushering, if you arrive after the time listed on the signup sheet, or are not dressed appropriately (dress is also explained on the signup sheet), Theatre Management reserves the right to deny you the ushering opportunity and your credit hour.

Don’t wait until the end of the semester to sign up for your practicum work. Slots fill up fast, and opportunities run out.
