DAMES AT SEA Sails into Gulf Shores June 3rd to July 1st…
SummerTide Theatre, the professional summer theatre of The University of Alabama, returns for its eighth year to the George C. Meyer Performing Arts Center (home of the South Baldwin Community Theatre) with a country girl, trying to make it in the world, finding stardom and love aboard a battleship in the award-winning musical Dames at Sea! Running Friday, June 3 through Friday, July 1, 2011, performances are Tuesday to Sunday evenings at 8:00PM.
With book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller, and music by Jim Wise, SummerTide Theatre will take audiences back to the 1930s, to the days of the flashy, glitzy Busby Berkeley-style musicals when a simple chorus girl can find fame and marriage. Dames at Sea centers around Ruby, a talented tap-dancer from the country who longs for Broadway success…and finds it aboard a battleship. In rehearsals for the next big Broadway hit (because the theatre is being torn down), Ruby falls in love with a sailor, Dick, who is also the show’s songwriter. But problems arise when Mona, the show’s diva star, and the ship’s Captain try to stop their plans. With help from their friends Joan and Lucky, everything ends happily ever after for Ruby and Dick…the show is a hit and their wedding is planned.
