Leon J. Weinberger

Prior to his retirement in 1999, Leon Weinberger served as
University Research Professor from 1984-1999, having joined
the Department of Religious Studies in 1964.

He received his B.A. from Clark University, Worcester, MA;
his M.H.L. (Masters of Hebrew Literature) from the Jewish
Theological Seminary of America, New York, NY; and his Ph.D.
from Brandeis University, Waltham, MA. Since its founding
in 1969, he has, also, served as the General Editor of the
Judaic Studies Series of the University
of Alabama Press.

During his career, Prof. Weinberger published twelve books,
edited thirty-eight more, wrote more than ninety articles
and book reviews in both English and Hebrew, and delivered
twenty papers at conferences throughout the United States
and Israel. Since his retirement, he has written a critical
edition and commentary entitled, Jewish
Poet in Muslim Egypt: Moses Dar'i's Hebrew Collection,
published by Brill of the Netherlands. A recipient of Research
Grants from The University of Alabama, the National Endowment
for the Humanities, and the Academy for Jewish Research, his
many accomplishments are listed in such publications as Dictionary
of American Scholars, Who's Who in World Jewry,
Who's Who in American Jewry, and Contemporary Authors.

Prof. Weinberger remains a member of the American Academy
of Religion (AAR), the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL),
and the Association for Jewish Studies (AJS), having served
on the last's Board of Directors.
