Advising

Although we focus mainly on offering career advice, if asked we'll also make a suggestion or two about your wardrobe.

Letters from the Undergraduate Advisor

Shortly before registration each semester, the undergraduate advisor sends a letter to all majors and minors notifying them of information pertinent to the registration period.

All majors (single and double majors) and minors (both REL and Judaic Studies) are recommended to meet with Prof. Ted Trost--the Department's Undergraduate Advisor--at least once each academic year, to ensure that they are properly proceeding through their program of study.

Registration

Students whose first major, or only major, is REL are required to obtain advising from the Department each semester, prior to being allowed to register for the next semester's courses. Unless the main office is notified that you have been advised, you will not be cleared on the registration system to register.

During the two-week period prior to registration each semester, a sign-up sheet for advising appointments is placed in the main office (Manly 212). Students can also contact Prof. Trost directly to make an appointment (email him here).

Degree Worksheets

Need a worksheet to check your progress toward satisfying the Department's major/minor degree requirements?

Need a checklist to see how you're doing with completing Core Curriculum requirements?

Registering for Upper-level REL Courses

To ensure that majors and minors obtain a seat in upper-level REL courses (300 and 400), the Department often holds spaces specfically for them. If an upper-level REL course seems to be closed, and you are a major or minor in the Department, please visit the main office when you are eligible to register, to learn if you can be registered for the class.

Declaring a Major or Minor

Students declaring a major or minor (or changing their major/minor) must submit a "Declaration of Major/Minor" form to the College of Arts & Sciences that has been signed by the REL Undergraduate Advisor and the Chair of the Department. Those interested should make an appointment to speak with Prof. Trost, the Department's Undergraduate Advisor for 2006-7.

New majors and minors should ensure that their local mailing address is on file in the Department, so that we can contact you and alert you to Department events, such as lectures and receptions.

After your declaration form has been signed by the Advisor and Department Chair, you can submit it on the second floor of Clark Hall. A copy is kept in the REL office.

Getting Ready to Graduate?

Students nearing graduate should make an appointment with Prof. Trost, to ensure that they have completed all of their REL degree requirements.

Also, please see the following "10 Steps to Graduation." And consider working through A&S's degree requirements.

Remember: REL 490 is required to graduate and it is offered only in the Spring semester each year.

If the College of Arts & Sciences Registrar does not understand how you have completed your major or minor requirements in the Department (i.e., if the Department has allowed you to substitute other courses for required classes), then a memo will be written by the Undergraduate Advisor, on your behalf, to the College. Such memos must be submitted early in your final semester, so make your appointment with Prof. Trost early.
