REL 372
Advanced Studies in Western Religion: Separation Processes between Early Christianity and Ancient Judaism

Dr. Gabriele Fassbeck
email: fassbeck@bama.ua.edu

In this class we will investigate the process of early Christianity's separation from ancient Judaism in the first centuries of the Christian era. We will focus on the evidence from New Testament documents, although we will also consult non-canonical sources of the first Christian centuries. Since both religious traditions were extremely diverse, the separation between the two was anything but smooth or clear-cut, showing signs of continuity and discontinuity, differing widely from region to region and lasting much longer than we tend to think.
