Religion in Culture Lecture
|
|
On Wednesday, November 16, 2005, the Department hosted another
in its Religion
in Culture lecture series--a lecture series founded
in 2001.
|
|
The lecture was delivered by Prof. Hank Lazer, of the Department
of English and the Office
of Academic Affairs, where he is the Assistant Vice President
for Undergraduate Programs and Services. Prof. Lazer's lecture
was entitled, "Religious vs. Religion: Innovative Poetry
and Spiritual Experience."

Culture lecture held in Gorgas Library

Prof. Lazer has published twelve books of poetry and two
books of criticism, and edits the Modern
and Contemporary Poetics Series for the University of
Alabama Press. His most recent collection of poetry, The
New Spirit, is a nominee for this year's Pulitzer
Prize.

Prof. Lazer speaks with Wendy Bruce, producer
and director for Center
for Public Television here at UA, and Dr. Jon Berry, who
recently defended his own Interdisciplinary doctoral dissertation
here at the University of Alabama, under the supervisor of
Emeritus REL Professor William
Doty. Jon is a project editor for the University of Alabama
Press and also grades the assignments for REL distance
education classes.

Prof. Lazer's lecture begins. His talk combined
readings from his own poetry with quotations and commentary
on both his own work and the poetry of others. Poetry, he
said, "is where words go for recess."

|
Approximately thirty people attended, a number
of whom were REL and English students.
|
 |
|
As always, a Department mug and a framed copy
of the flyer used to advertise the lecture were presented
to our guest. Copies of all Religion in Culture flyers
hang in the Department's seminar room in Manly Hall.
