Honors Day, 2005

On April 15, 2005, the Department hosted its
fourth annual Honors Day luncheon on the second floor of Manly
Hall, immediately following the College of Arts & Sciences
Undergraduate Honors Convocation, to recognize the accomplishments
of its latest group of Silverstein
Fellowship award winners as well as all our of our graduates.
Prof. Catherine
Roach (left, speaking with Silverstein Fellow, Matt
Satcher), had a busy Honors Day attending New
College's various events as well as REL's lunch.
| |
Prof. Ted
Trost with the tiniest attendee, his and Prof. Roach's
youngest son Benjamin (who, we learned, likes chocolate ...
a lot).
| |
Josh McDonough (left), once again a Silverstein
award winner and assistant to Prof. Schaeffer
for the 2004-5 school year, speaking with his father, Dale
McDonough (from Athens, Alabama) and Victoria Bohrer (a major
in International Economics)
| |
Dr. Gabriele
Fassbeck, who has taught in the Department for the past
two years thanks to the Aronov
Endowment, speaking with Samantha Sastre, Silverstein
Fellow and Religious Studies major.

Prof. Kurtis Schaeffer and Heather Swindler
(the ones wearing the cool sunglasses) with their children,
Ruby and Max (he's the one with his eyes glued on his big
sister). Rumor has it that, all throughout the lunch, Prof.
McCutcheon was trying to put Ruby in with the sodas and the
ice. Fortunately, she informed him that this was no place
for little girls.
Even a flat tire driving up Interstate 20
to Tuscaloosa from Texas couldn't keep Marianne's parents
away from Honors Day.
Prof. Murphy,
once again our host for the Department's ceremony, gets things
underway. Matt Satcher, REL and Philosophy double major and
a Philosophy award winner at the Arts & Sciences morning
convocation, looks on, at right.
After the Silverstein Fellows received each
of their awards, Prof. Schaeffer took over as master of ceremonies
and presented Prof. Fassbeck with the Department's copy of
the five volume Encyclopedia of Judaism. Prof. Fassbeck
and her family have decided to return to her native Germany;
she will certainly be missed in the Department, by both her
colleagues and her students.
Dr. Fassbeck, who recently led a class trip
to see a Dead
Sea Scrolls exhibit, offered some very kind words in return,
going so far as to offer her services as Alabama's ambassador
to Germany! She also donated to the Department a copy of one
of her own books,
which will proudly be added to the collection of faculty members'
books in the Department's library.
Following his presentation to Dr. Fassbeck,
Prof. Schaeffer deviated radically from the event's tightly
choreographed script, thereby puzzling the usually "in
control" Prof. McCutcheon (who, we all know, has a particular
fondness for Jones Soda [see his blue bubble gum flavored
drink on the railing?], the official "sexy
pop" of REL events since his arrival on campus in
2001)...
... it turned out that he also received something
on Honors Day--a plaque from the REL faculty and students
thanking him for his efforts on their behalf. He was, much
like Max in the bottom right corner of the photo, speechless.
Being the fourth year in which the Department has held
its annual honors day event, another banner was added to
the railing, listing the names of the Silverstein Fellows.
The 2005-6 Silverstein Fellows who were able
to attend our luncheon were, from left to right: Josh McDonough,
Brian Robbins, Matt Satcher, Kristin Bradbury, Marianne Stanton,
Samantha Sastre, and Brandon Andrews. The faculty look forward
to hosting them all at lunch at the University Club next week.
(Note to self: no jeans allowed.)
This year's banner will reappear next Honors
Day.
Congratulations!

Photos, and arrangements for the event,
are thanks once again to Betty Dickey.
