Beyond Good and Evil
DVD
App. 35 minutes
2004-121
The belief that “good triumphs over evil” resonates deeply
in our psyche through religious, cultural, and political discourses.
It is also a common theme in the entertainment media where
the struggle between good and evil is frequently resolved
through violence. The potential negative impact of media violence
on children has long been a public concern. It is even more
troubling when U.S. military violence, both in the news and
in the entertainment, is often glorified as heroic and patriotic.
Children's worlds of fantasy and reality collided when our
political leaders, in response to the September 11th tragedy,
simplified the complex international relationships into a
fight between good and evil. The Bush administration used
the narrative strategically—and the news media perpetuated
it with enthusiasm—pumping up patriotism and generating public
support for the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. This video
examines how the "good and evil" rhetoric, in both the entertainment
and the news media, has helped children to dehumanize the
enemies, justify their killing and treat the suffering of
innocent civilians as necessary sacrifice. The interviews
include media scholars (Robert Jenson, Robin Andersen), child
psychologists (Diane Levin, Nancy Carlsson-Paige), teachers
(Merrie Najimy, Brian Wright), educators (Eli Newberger and
Betty Burkes), and the children themselves.

Mrs. Summerford's husband was the head preacher at the Church
of Jesus with Signs Following, but he was unable to cast out
his own demons. A heavy drinker, he was prone to fits of passion
over his wife's infidelities, real and imagined. He was also
a snake handler. And on the fateful night, he went to his
wife in a drunken stupor and demanded that she tell him the
truth. When her answers did not satisfy him, he forced her
at gunpoint to thrust her hand into a rattlesnake cage! But
the drama was just beginning...

Constructing Public Opinion
DVD
App. 32 minutes
2004-123
The media regularly use public opinion polls in their reporting
of important news stories. But how exactly do they report
them and to what end? In this insightful and accessible interview,
Professor Justin Lewis demonstrates the way in which polling
data are themselves used by the media to not just reflect
what Americans think but instead to construct public opinion
itself. Addressing vital issues (e.g., the role the media
play in "manufacturing consent" for political elites, what
polls really tell us about public opinion, what Americans
actually think about politics), Constructing Public Opinion
provides a new way to think about the relationship between
politics, media and the public. Exploding the myth that most
Americans are moderate or conservative, Constructing Public
Opinion demonstrates the way in which political elites help
to promote the military industrial complex and how the media
sustains belief in an electoral system with a built-in bias
against the interests of ordinary people. Well illustrated
with graphics and many examples of media coverage, it is the
first film of its kind to present a critical analysis of media
and public opinion.

Control Room
DVD
App. 86 minutes
2005-13
In the spring of 2003, just before President Bush declared
that the United States would go to war with Iraq, documentary
filmmaker Jehane Noujaim and her crew set up their cameras
inside Al Jazeera, the satellite news network for the Arab
world. Though US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld accuses
Al Jazeera of lying in its news reports, CONTROL ROOM tells
a different story. Candid interviews with some of Al Jezeera's
leaders--like Sudanese journalist Hassan Ibrahim who formerly
headed the BBC Arab News service, and senior producer Samir
Khader who talks openly about his respect for American values--
offer an Arab perspective on the US and the war. Meanwhile,
Americans such as NBC correspondent David Shuster and Central
Command press officer Lt. Josh Rushing, both working in Qatar,
offer another point of view. Through various interviews, Al
Jazeera is presented as a grass- roots organization devoted
to being an independent news source. In addition, it is not
afraid of showing the brutality of war. The station airs shocking
footage of the devastation caused by US bombings, showing
the resultant carnage of Iraqi civilians, Iraqi soldiers,
as well as US soldiers. The Al Jazeera reporters dissect US
news reports, which rarely contain coverage of this nature,
pointing out how information is packaged to exclude certain
truths. When asked her opinion of objectivity, Al Jazeera
producer Deema Khatib calls it a mirage, which is a powerful
statement about the foggy nature of truth as interpreted by
the media. A fascinating look inside Al Jazeera, CONTROL ROOM
will challenge viewers to question what to believe from the
news they receive.

Daughters of the Dust
DVD

Working with a theme and history that's obviously dear to
her heart, first-time writer-director Julie Dash's exquisitely
alive film chronicles the last days of the Gullah, an Americanized
West African people in danger of losing their identity. Dash
makes up for some overly schematic dialogue and an occasionally
pokey pace with some strong performances (particularly Cora
Lee Day as the sternly matriarchal Nana) and an absolutely
wonderful visual sense (kudos should also go to her ace cinematographer
Arthur Jafa, whose dazzlingly sumptuous imagery surely inspired
Jonathan Demme's later Beloved). A rapturously textured, wholly
mesmerizing glimpse into the Gullah culture.

Derrida
VHS
App. 85 minutes
2005-12
Directors Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering Kofman present this documentary
portrait of the intellectual and philosopher Jacques Derrida.
Beginning with his theory of deconstruction--the notion of
getting to the basics behind our thought processes and the
way in which we view the world-- Derrida is portrayed "naturally"
walking down the street or shuffling about his house. He frequently
observes the camera, noting that its presence alone makes
the situation unnatural, and not real. For instance, he says,
on a normal day at home, he would stay in his pajamas and
bathrobe rather than being (as we see him on film) dressed
nicely and slightly primped. Derrida's interaction with the
camera, the filmmakers, and others--his wife, his peers, his
students--is in itself the embodiment of his theories. He
talks about narcissism and being incapable of viewing himself--but
rather being viewed by "the other"-- while watching tapes
of himself, or looking at his own portrait. He travels to
South Africa and visits Nelson Mandela's old prison cell,
then conducts a discussion with a group of students about
forgiveness. Bits of his essays are read in intervals, as
are brief biographies explaining his origins and experiences
as a Jewish Algerian. While DERRIDA seems to be more about
the man and his quotidian life rather than his work and writings,
one might guess that separating the two would seem, at least
to the philosopher himself, "not possible."

Edward Said's book Orientalism has been profoundly influential

he talks about the context within which the book was conceived,
its main themes, and how its original thesis relates to the
contemporary understanding of "the Orient" as represented
in the mass media. "That's the power of the discourse of Orientalism.
If you're thinking about people and Islam, and about that
part of the wold, those are the words you constantly have
to use. To think past it, to go beyond it, not to use it,
is virtually impossible, because there is no knowledge that
isn't codified in this way about that part of the world."

Man in Nature: What is the essential difference between the
world of nature and the world of man? Watts, in his mountain
retreat in North Carolina, speaks of our failure to feel at
home in the inherent "wiggliness" of nature, the confusion
of symbols with reality, and the oversimplification of language
in an infinitely complex world. Work as Play: On his ferryboat
in Sausalito, Watts speaks of the division we have in our
culture between work and play, of how when you take the play
out of work, life becomes a joyless drudge.

The More It Changes: Watts explores three fantasies: (1) Are
we a reproduction which over the centuries of evolution has
worked out to be a replica of something else that was going
on? (2) Why does every living thing think it's human? (3)

Flowers of St. Francis
VHS
App. 75 minutes
2004-27
This is one of the most beautiful and humbling pictures I
have seen. I discovered it recently along with three other
Rossellinis, "India Matre Bhumi", "Fear", and "L'Amore" -
all masterworks. But so far based on the first viewing, "Francesco,
giullare di Dio" ranks with my absolute favorite Rossellini
pictures, "Europa '51" & "The Rise of Louis XIV". From the
sublime opening long shot of Franciscans arriving in Assissi
to the final unforgettable moment where they all spin and
fall on the ground and Rossellini's circular camera connects
the earth, sky, and water in perfect harmony, "Francesco"
is an authentic, invigorating piece of art.

DVD
App. 90 minutes
2005-16
FRONTLINE takes an in-depth look at the multibillion-dollar

messages deeper into the fabric of our lives. Through sophisticated
market research methods to better understand consumers and
by turning to the little-understood techniques of public relations
to make sure their messages come from sources we trust, marketers
are crafting messages that resonate with an increasingly cynical
public. In this documentary essay, correspondent Douglas Rushkoff
(correspondent for FRONTLINE's "The Merchants of Cool") also
explores how the culture of marketing has come to shape the
way Americans understand the world and themselves and how
the techniques of the persuasion industries have migrated
to politics, shaping the way our leaders formulate policy,
influence public opinion, make decisions, and stay in power.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
DVD
App. 108 minutes
2005-35
Spencer Tracy's last performance was in this well-meaning,
handsome film by Stanley Kramer about a pair of white parents
(Tracy and Katharine Hepburn) trying to make sense of their
daughter's impending marriage to an African American doctor
(Sidney Poitier). The film has been knocked over the years
for padding conflict and stoking easy liberalism by making
Poitier's character in every socioeconomic sense a good catch:
But what if Kramer had made this stranger a factory worker?
Would the audience still find it as easy to accept a mixed-race
relationship? But there's no denying the drawing power of
this movie, which gets most of its integrity from the stirring
performances of Tracy and Hepburn. When the former (who had
been so ill that the production could not get completion insurance)
gives a speech toward the end about race, love, and much else,
it's impossible not to be affected by the last great moment
in a great actor's life and career.

Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear, and the Selling of
American Empire
DVD
App. 64 minutes
2004-124
Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear & the Selling of American
Empire examines how a radical fringe of the Republican Party
used the trauma of the 9/11 terror attacks to advance a pre-existing
agenda to radically transform American foreign policy while
rolling back civil liberties and social programs at home.
The documentary places the Bush Administration's false justifications
for war in Iraq within the larger context of a two-decade
struggle by neoconservatives to dramatically increase military
spending in the wake of the Cold War, and to expand American
power globally by means of military force. At the same time,
the documentary argues that the Bush Administration has sold
this radical and controversial plan for aggressive American
military intervention by deliberately manipulating intelligence,
political imagery, and the fears of the American people after
9/11.

valuable is Fest's account of the fateful years 1932 and 1933,
when, playing off economic crisis, frustrated German nationalism,
and the desperation of Germany's conservative elites, Hitler
bluffed his way into office, then moved with ruthless efficiency
to seize absolute power. Examining the public and private
dynamics of Nazism's unhinged dictatorship, Fest uncovers
the deeper logics for the devastation and horrors that followed.

I Heart Huckabees
DVD
App. 106 minutes
2005-33
Billed as "an existential comedy," I Heart Huckabees is a
flawed yet endearingly audacious screwball romp that dares
to ponder life's biggest questions. Much of director David
O. Russell's philosophical humor is dense, talky, and impenetrable,
leading critic Roger Ebert to observe that "it leaves the
viewer out of the loop," and suggesting that Russell's screenplay
(written with his assistant, Jeff Baena) is admirably bold
yet frustratingly undisciplined. Russell's ideas are big but
his expression of them is frenetic, centering on the unlikely
pairing of an environmentalist (Jason Schwartzman) and a firefighter
(Mark Wahlberg) as they depend on existential detectives (Lily
Tomlin, Dustin Hoffman) and a French nihilist (Isabelle Huppert)
to make sense of their existential crises, brought on (respectively)
by a two-faced chain-store executive (Jude Law) and his spokesmodel
girlfriend (Naomi Watts), and the aftermath of 9/11's terrorism.
No brief description can do justice to Russell's comedic conceit;
you'll either be annoyed and mystified or elated and delighted
by this wacky primer for coping with 21st century lunacy.
Deserving of its mixed reviews, I Heart Huckabees is an audacious
mess, like life itself, and accepting that is the key to enjoying
both.

-Alternative Lifestyles in California: West Meets East:
The spiritual impulse of the time steps beyond the boundaries

Bay area. Here religious ideas and life styles of East and
West mingle and people brought up in a largely Christian cultural
climate look East to Taoism and Hinduism for inspiration.
-Reflection on the Long Search: In this episode Ronald
Eyre asks himself some questions. It is not a film in which
he hands out diplomas to believers of the religion that pleased
him best. The search, for him, began long before this series
got off the ground and will continue long into the future.
There are no winners and no losers. There is an element of
personal stocktaking, however, and before doing so, Eyre reveals
his own background, the mental furniture that he of necessity
packs whenever he goes on search.

on his wife's murder. His quality of life has been severely

life by tattooing notes on himself and taking pictures of
things with a Polaroid camera. The movie is told in forward
flashes of events that are to come that compensate for his
unreliable memory, during which he has liaisons with various
complex characters. Leonard badly wants revenge for his wife's
murder, but, as numerous characters explain, there may be
little point if he won't remember it in order to provide closure
for him. The movie veers between these future occurrences
and a telephone conversation Leonard is having in his motel
room in which he compares his current state to that of a client
whose claim he once dealt with.

Monsieur Ibrahim
DVD
App. 95 minutes
2005-30
Some crowded Parisian atmosphere and the burnished presence
of Omar Sharif make this coming-of-age tale a pleasure. It's
the early 1960s, and an adolescent Jewish boy (Pierre Boulanger),
mostly left to his own devices by an ineffectual father, makes
friends with the worldly wise Persian man (Sharif) who runs
a small neighborhood grocery. The kid's fumbling experiences
with sexual curiosity are the reliable stuff of many a French
movie, but the unlikely friendship of young Jew and old Muslim
make for an offbeat through-line. Francois Dupeyron's film
shifts gears in its final section, moving from its flavorful
location and into the wide-open spaces, and it goes on too
long with too many pieces of advice. But overall this is a
warm and winning experience, with Omar Sharif holding an instructive
class in the power of understated movie-star charisma.

propaganda." Professor Justin Lewis of Cardiff University

and Herman's original research. Part 1: The Filters of News

The Origin of Satan
App. 120 minutes
2004-60
In The Origin of Satan, Elaine Pagels argues that, during
that first 100 years, one of the oldest Christian traditions
had been born. Dominant factions within Christianity had begun
to claim for themselves sole access to divine favor and revelation,
and to denounce all detractors--pagans, atheists, Jews, even
other Christians--as agents of the Evil One himself. Every
difference of opinion had become a skirmish in the cosmic
war raging between God's loyal army and the Satanic legions.
In The Origin of Satan, Elaine Pagels outlines how our Christian
ancestors set for us a course of damning those who disagree
with us. She describes with exceptional fairness the basic
human impulse to do just that out of a need to grasp at assurance
in the face of opposition. But, as an alternative to defining
all detractors, in the style of St. Paul, as "servants of
Satan," Pagels commends to today's Christians the challenge
posed by a tradition of the faithful from the first century
through St. Francis of Assisi to Martin Luther King. She presents
a strain of Christians who "have believed they stood on God's
side without demonizing their opponents."

study of burial practices, this film with its images of silver
plated caskets and supermarkets of funeral ware will afford
a dramatic contrast to non-Western ways.

Television Under the Swastika
VHS
App. 54 minutes
2004-139
Recently uncovered footage, long buried in East German archives,
confirms that television's first revolution occurred under
the Third Reich. From 1935 to 1944, Berlin studios churned
out the world's first regular TV programming, replete with
the evening news, street interviews, sports coverage, racial
programs, and interviews with Nazi officials. In its stated
mission - to imprint the image of the Führer onto every German
heart - Nazi television proved a major disappointment. But

Award-nominated film attempts to reveal how the Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the FBI and the Department
of Justice waged an unjustified war against Koresh and his
sect and intentionally misled the public about what happened.

The Wave & The Children's Story
VHS
App. 42 minutes & 23 minutes
2004-206
Two films on one tape. "The Wave" is a thought-provoking
dramatization of an actual classroom experiment on individualism
vs. conformity in which a high school teacher formed his own
"Reich" (called "The Wave") to show why the German people
could so willingly embrace Nazism. This unflinching yet sensitive
1984 Emmy Award-winner raises critical questions: When does
dedication to a group cross the line from loyalty to fanaticism?
Does power corrupt? What is the nature of propaganda and mass
persuasion? Can something like the Nazi Holocaust happen again?
"The Children's Story" forces us to look at all that we, as
Americans, hold precious, and how vulnerable we are without
truly understanding the meaning of that which we espouse.
A simple reiiteration of the Pledge of Allegiance, taught
to first graders across the country, goes deeper than teaching
just the words. Set in "small town anywhere", the story of
children in a classroom taken over after a military invasion,
this powerful piece takes us to the core of our beliefs, and
makes us aware, more than ever, of the true meaning of "allegiance".

The Wisdom of Faith with Huston Smith
VHS
2004-86
DVD
2005-36
- Christianity and Judaism: Because we are removed
from spirituality today, Smith believes we find it difficult
to understand the true meaning of Christianity. Smith explains
that Christianity wouldn’t have existed if its "spirit had
not been real and dense and palpable and evident to everyone
around." Smith finds the intimate relationship between the
Jews and their God "a living conversation between the human
and the divine that goes on generation after generation."
Through his son-in-law, Smith came to admire the beauty of
the weekly Jewish shabbat, and when his daughter died, he
found solace in Jewish mourning rituals. (57 minutes, color)
-Confucianism: Born in China of missionary parents,
Smith learned about Chinese language, culture, and religion
while growing up near Shanghai. Smith explains how the intertwining
of opposites is key to understanding the great religions of
China—Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Smith shows that
Eastern religions provide "an emphasis on direct experience
and a method for attaining that." He introduces yoga, which
he has been practicing for 50 years, as one such method. (56
minutes, color)
-Hinduism and Buddhism: This program explores the two
great religions to come from India. "The historian of religion
can find almost anything he wants in India, enacted with intensity.
What remains is to carry its insight into everyday life."
Smith uncovered the mysteries of multiphonic chanting among
Tibetan lamas, previously unknown in the West. Characterizing
these chants as "the holiest sound I have ever heard," Smith
reveals the chanting to be a form of meditation. Smith spent
ten weeks with a Zen master silently meditating 8 hours a
day, where he derived insights that help the viewer understand
the way of Zen Buddhism. (56 minutes, color)
-Islam: Smith discovered Islam as an adult, and became
enamored with Islamic conceptions of order, justice, mercy,
and compassion. He still prays five times a day as Muslims
do. The Sufis opened the doors of Islam to Smith. Through
their trance-inducing dances, these mystics bring God into
the immediate moment. Smith and Moyers discuss misconceptions
about Islam held in the West today. (56 minutes, color)
-A Personal Philosophy: This program summarizes and distills
what we have learned about the great religions in this series.
Smith’s lifetime of experience and study helps him to go beyond
the differences between each tradition. He shows how the cultivation
of virtues valued by all religions—intelligence, compassion,
creativity, truth, beauty, and goodness—can lead to transcendence.
In the many faces of God he has contemplated, Huston Smith
sees no conflict. He believes them all to be windows on the
same transcendent truths. All wisdom traditions ultimately
make the same claim, that everything emanates from an absolute
perfection. (56 minutes, color)

Zen: In Search of Enlightenment
VHS
App. 120 minutes
2004-89
Zen-the Japanese form of Buddhism-is the determining element
in the Japanese character. It is not a matter of belief in
a deity, a conviction that certain acts incur divine punishment
and others divine reward; rather, it is a mind-set and a way
of life that stresses the most rigorous kinds of discipline
and self-abnegation and fosters a single-minded devotion to
one's goal and unquestioning obedience to one's superior.
To watch a postulate monk sit without making any visible response
to being whacked on the shoulder with a two-by-four-and to
know that Japanese business men commonly go on retreat to
such monasteries-is bound to give American businessmen and
women pause.
