Events

Prof. Cary Nelson--literary critic and President of the American Association of Universty Professors (AAUP)--will be our 11th annual Aronov Lecturer for 2012-13.

To serve not only the needs and interests of our students but also the wider University as well as the local Alabama community, the Department of Religious Studies is pleased to host a number of lectures each semester, organized by Prof. Steven Ramey, which include the:

Aronov Lecture

Religion in Culture Lecture Series

Religion in Culture Lunchtime Discussion Series

TAK Lunchtime Discussion Series

This discussion series is an informal opportunity for our students to meet scholars--whether professors on our own campus or visitors from other campuses--and discussion their work with them.

Both of the Department's lecture series are open to the public and are free of charge.

The lunchtime discussion series, however, is limited to majors and minors in the Department of Religious Studies.

Although some of these events are funded by generous grants from the College of Arts & Sciences' Anonymous Lecture Fund for the Humanities, others are funded by the Department or in cooperation with other units.

Please consider joining us at an upcoming event. For more information, call our main office at 205-348-5271.

The Relevance of the Liberal Arts in the Twenty-First Century Department of Religious Studies

In this period of accountability and assessment in higher education, with serious competition for limited funds, what can experts in the Humanities and Social Sciences contribute to society and their institutions through their research and pedagogy? In public discourse, the necessity of the Natural Sciences is often cast as self-evident, but what of the liberal arts?

We believe that the disciplines typically associated with the Humanities and Social Sciences need to illustrate more intentionally their necessity and contributions. To that end, this series of public events planned for 2012-2013, and organized by the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Alabama, focuses on explicitly addressing the question of the relevance of these disciplines.
