Bruce Lincoln, the seventh annual Aronov Lecturer

To serve not only the needs and interests of our students but also the wider University as well as the local Alabama community, the Department of Religious Studies is pleased to host a number of lectures each semester, organized by Prof. Steven Ramey, which include the:

Aronov Lecture

Religion in Culture Lecture Series

And, as of the 2008-9 academic year, Prof. Steve Jacobs organizes and hosts our Religion in Culture Lunchtime Discussion Series, devoted to providing our students with an informal opportunity to meet scholars--whether professors on our own campus or visitors from other campuses--and discussion their work with them.

Both of the Department's lecture series are open to the public and are free of charge.

The lunchtime discussion series, however, is limited to majors and minors in the Department of Religious Studies.

Although some of these events are funded by generous grants from the College of Arts & Sciences' Anonymous Lecture Fund for the Humanities, others are funded by the Department or in cooperation with other units.

Please consider joining us at an upcoming event. For more information, call our main office at 205-348-5271.

For the upcoming academic year, we already have two important events in the early stages of planning....

The Seventh Annual Aronov Lecture

Center for Middle Eastern Studies
Program for Medieval Studies

University of Chicago

"In Praise of Things Chaotic: Politics in Creation Mythology"

7:00-8:30 p.m.
Thursday, October 23
Gorgas Library 205

Working from mythic accounts of creation that come from archaic Greece, medieval Scandinavia, and Zoroastrian Iran, Prof. Lincoln's paper explores what is meant by "chaos" -- void, disorder, anarchy, violence, or something else -- and the politics of how scholars and others have tried to think the chaotic.

Prof. Lincoln is among the most influential and rigorous Historians of Religions now working in the U.S., and among the most internationally influential scholars of religion. His expertise runs from the ancient world to the modern and his lecture promises to be intellectually stimulating.

This year's Aronov Lecture is made possible with the kind assistance of Gorgas Library.

Prof. Lincoln will also be hosted at a lunchtime discussion.

Religion in Culture Workshop

Hayden White
University of California
Santa Cruz

April 16-17, 2009

There is no more influential theorist of historiography than Prof. White--his work revolutionized how it is that we conceive of the past and writing about the past. Although retired, he will visit our campus for two full days, to offer workshops for students and faculty.

This event is co-sponsored by the College of Arts & Sciences, English, and New College.
