Norvin Richards Award

The Norvin Richards Award, is given in honor of Professor Richards's long and distinguished career as a member of the department's faculty. It is awarded each spring to the best student or students majoring in philosophy and intending a career in the law. It is made on the basis of performance in one or more of the courses making up the department's pre-law track. Currently, those include:

  1. PHL 100 Introduction to Deductive Logic or PHL 103 Honors Deductive Logic or PHL 104 Critical Thinking
  2. PHL 220 Political Philosophy
  3. PHL 225 Philosophical Issues in Criminal Law
  4. PHL 226 Philosophical Issues in Civil Law
  5. PHL 227 Philosophical Issues in Constitutional Law
  6. PHL 412 Philosophy of Law
  7. Special seminars in philosophical questions about the law.

The Norvin Richards Award in Philosophy and the Law carries with it a substantial cash award, and the names of the winners are inscribed on a permanent plaque in the lobby of ten Hoor hall. Last year's winners were Chase Espy and Sarah Simpler, each of whom received $1250.
