Associate Professor, Dr. Richard Richards first joined the Department in 1997, and rejoined as an Assistant Professor in Spring 2000 (Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University), where he also received a certificate in the History of Science, Medicine and Technology.
His specialties are philosophy of science, the history and philosophy of biology, and aesthetics. He is involved in the Blount Undergraduate Initiative, in both the planning of curriculum and teaching.
Dr. Richards has published articles in Studies in the History and Philosophy of Science, Perspectives on Science, Philosophy of Science, The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, and Cosmos and History: The Journal of Natural and Social Philosophy. Recent work includes essays for The Oxford Handbook for the Philosophy of Biology, The Cambridge Companion to the Origin of Species, The Harvard Companion to Evolution, and The John Wiley Encyclopedia of Life Sciences.
Other interests include the performing and fine arts. He has performed professionally with major ballet companies in both the United States and Europe. His drawings and paintings are held in private collections, as well as the Museum at Yosemite National Park where he has served as artist-in-residence. He has served as the University of Alabama Director for the American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive for the past six of the past 7 years.
