Associate Professor, joined the Department in 1995 (Ph.D. from UCLA). Dr. Alter specializes in philosophy of mind and philosophy of language, with a special interest in consciousness and the mind-body problem. He is co-editor (with Sven Walter) of Phenomenal Concepts and Phenomenal Knowledge: New Essays on Consciousness and Physicalism, Oxford University Press, 2007. His recent papers include "Phenomenal Knowledge Without Experience," forthcoming in The Case for Qualia, E. Wright (ed.), MIT Press; "On the conditional analysis of phenomenal concepts," forthcoming in Philosophical Studies; and "Does representationalism undermine the knowledge argument?" in the Phenomenal Concepts collection.  His website is located at http://www.as.ua.edu/philos/talter.
