PHL 400: Special Studies in Ethics: Utilitarianism
Prerequisite: Must have taken at least three philosophy classes or one of PHL 200-Ethics, PHL 204-Honors Ethics, or PHL 294-Medical Ethics.
Topics will include many of the great questions in ethical theory: What is Justice? What is the good life? How far do our obligations of charity extend? What is the relationship between value and obligation? Is utilitarianism true?
PHL 412: Philosophy of Law (3)
Prerequisite: Any one of PHL 225, PHL 226, PHL 227, or permission of the instructor.
Classic and contemporary theories about the nature of law and legal systems, with added discussion of the proper role of judges in such systems, the relationship between justice and mercy, some moral questions about juries, and a brief consideration of legal negotiation.
