Nihongo Man - The Grammar Avenger!

Nihongo (Japanese language) Web is an interactive, online Japanese language and culture program from The University of Alabama. Nihongo Web is available for high school and/or college credit, or for those who just want to learn Japanese on their own. Enrollment is open year-round, and the finish deadline depends on your enrollment start date. High school students may take 1 school year or block to complete a level, and college credit students may take six months to finish. We offer Japanese 1, 2, and 3, equivalent to 3 years of high school or 3 semesters of college Japanese. College credit eligible students can get up to 11 credit hours total for the three semesters (JA 101 and JA 102 are 4 credits each, and JA 201 is 3 credits). Your transcript (college credit only) will be available from The University of Alabama Office of the Registrar. See the Information link about enrolling for college credit. High school students must have approval from their local schools to get high school credit, and we supply the final grade information on letterhead to the school principal.

You will practice your speaking skills live with the Japanese instructor and tutors, and test your Japanese skills with the interactive online games, tutorials, and quizzes. Message forums and e-mail provide you with teacher and peer support 24/7.

Browse the Module 1 lesson of Japanese 1 (others are password protected) to take a look at how the course is presented. When you enroll, you will be given access to the entire web site. Our online language courses are a hybrid of self study of Web-based materials and live interaction.

To receive high school or college credit in the courses, you need to contact a local exam proctor (e.g., a teacher or administrator at your school or college who agrees to follow our procedures). The proctor does NOT need to know ANY Japanese, and all that is required is that he or she has an email account that can receive, open, and print PDF files. The proctor will mail or fax tests back to us for grading.

Please look over the subscription agreement carefully before you enroll. You will need to follow our rules of conduct, deadlines, and payment policies. The learning materials can all be found online!
