“Peace is not the absence of conflict but the presence of creative alternatives for responding to conflict – alternatives to passive or aggressive responses, alternatives to violence.”
-- Dorothy Thompson, the first American journalist expelled from Nazi Germany

Barbara Schlichtman is a journalist, attorney and yoga instructor. She finds that her experiences in each of these fields come together in teaching conflict resolution. She teaches conflict resolution from an interest-based approach working to show students that if underlying interests are met then resolution is more likely.

Barbara’s background includes working as a reporter and editor for The (Baton Rouge) Advocate in Louisiana; working as the first legal news editor for CNN.com; teaching journalism at the University of Southern Maine and University of Hawaii at Hilo; and teaching conflict resolution in Hawaii and Alabama. She is also a certified Kripalu Yoga Instructor.

Barbara’s full-time work at the University of Alabama is as the assistant director of the Office of Student Media where she works closely with The Crimson White newspaper, a student-run newspaper that publishes four times a week. She is an advocate of teachings students how to practice good journalism as well as giving them a strong understanding of the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment and the media’s role in society.

She enjoys working with students who want to write and get published because she believes journalism can be one of the most fun and gratifying of all careers.
