What are Learning Communities?

Freshman Learning Communities

Freshman Learning Communities (FLCs) provide students with unique learning opportunities, but, unlike the living-learning communities, these do not involve students living together in the same residence hall.  FLCs are small groups of students who easily become good friends by taking several courses together and by meeting weekly with a faculty member to discuss the topic of the community.  FLC topics range from ones that explore particular majors, to those that help students develop good campus survival skills, to several that probe other interesting topics.  Each Freshman Learning Community... Read More →

Living-Learning Communities

Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) Living-Learning Communities differ from Freshmen Learning Communities because participating students not only take a one-credit seminar and core courses together, they also live and study together in a residential setting.   Each LLC is designed with specific students in mind and include services, programs and activities to enhance the academic program for those students. Registration for Freshman Learning Communities (FLCs)  is available at http://flc.ua.edu/. New communities are added weekly so check back for additions.   Room assignments for Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) may be requested through the housing application at http://housing.ua.edu/. Please note that some communities require a separate application and approval for acceptance, which will be noted upon selection, while others may be requested directly through the Housing application site.  Read More →
