This represents a partial list of current and recent projects supported by ISSR. Basic and Applied Behavioral Research Projects Decision Making and Substance Abuse Among Inner City Youth J. Barth, N. Rhodes, and D. McCallum Funded by NIDA This project applies the dual process model to decision making and thought processes of high risk children ages 10 to 12 years. Behavioral Study to Investigate Youth DUI and Risky Driving N. Rhodes Funded by CDC This project investigates the social and attitudinal underpinnings of risky driving behavior in teens and young adults. Strengthening Neighborhood Investment D. McCallum Funded by SAMHSA and NIDA. This project delivers a substance abuse treatment program housed in targeted low-income neighborhoods and conducts community development activities in these neighborhoods. Youth Smoking Behavior and Decision Making N. Rhodes Funded by CDC This project investigates the attitudes and emotions connected to smoking among youth in poverty.
Tobacco Beliefs, Behaviors, and Attitudes in Alabama M. Conaway and D. McCallum; Funded by Alabama Department of Public Health. This statewide telephone survey assesses the beliefs, behaviors and attitudes of Alabama residents regarding tobacco use.
State of the Alabama Workforce M. Conaway and D. McCallum Funded by Alabama Department of Industrial Relations and Alabama Department of Economic & Community Affairs These statewide telephone surveys, conducted in collaboration with the Center for Business and Economic Research, assess the characteristics of Alabama’s workforce including levels of underemployment and unemployment. Attitudes toward Risky Driving M. Conaway and D. McCallum; Funded by CDC This telephone survey is conducted in support of the project by N. Rhodes to study youth DUI and risky driving. This represents a partial list of evaluation research projects supported by ISSR. Farm Safety Day Evaluations D. McCallum Funding from CDC/NIOSH and Progressive Agriculture Foundation This series of projects evaluates the effectiveness of the Progressive Agriculture Farm Safety Day Program. Teaching American History Program J. Barth Funded by USDE ISSR evaluates this program which provide professional development for a teacher training program for improving courses in American History at the middle and high school level. http://teachinghistory.ua.edu/ Graduate Teaching Fellows in Middle and High School Education J. Barth; Funded by NSF ISSR evaluates this program which engages math, science, and engineering graduate students in a program to improve K-12 science education. Mathematics Technology and Learning Center (MTLC) D. McCallum ISSR conducts an on-going evaluation of courses taught in the MTLC by assessing student opinions regarding course delivery and outcomes. Interdisciplinary Research Interest Groups ISSR has initiated the formation of several interdisciplinary research interest groups to facilitate the development of collaborative research projects and grant proposals. Obesity Research Interest Group This group is pursuing interests in cultural and behavioral aspects of overweight and obesity problems.
