Scholarships and
Financial Aid

Student and their families often need assistance in understanding the different types of scholarships and financial aid that are available as they decide how best to finance university education.  While there are certainly exceptions, the most common experience is for families and students to rely upon a mixture of funding sources.  This may mean that it is necessary to gather information from various sources and several important ones are listed along the margin as contacts external to the College of Arts and Sciences.

Scholarships are awarded at the University level, at the college level, and at the level of the academic department or program level.  While there are different sources of scholarships, there is one application and one deadline, December 1.  The scholarship application is included in the admissions materials provided to students.  If it is necessary to provide any additional material, the information concerning this is noted on the scholarship application and on the UA scholarship website, scholarships.ua.edu.

The UA Scholarship Office is the best source of information on University level scholarships and can be reached at 205.348.8201.  For information on College of Arts and Sciences scholarships, please contact the A&S Student Services Center at 205.348.5970 or email studentservices@as.ua.edu.

In awarding College and departmental scholarships, the College of Arts and Sciences is guided by the wishes of the scholarship donor.  In selecting students who meet the criteria established by the donor, we consider high school grades, college entrance test scores, and accomplishments of the student.  Scholarships may be awarded for one year or for multiple years.

The best source for information on financial aid is the University Office of Financial Aid.  This office can be reached by telephone at 205.348.6756.

The best source of information on costs, billing, and other payment arrangements is the University Office of Student Receivables at 205.348.5350.
