About the College

The College of Arts and Sciences is Alabama's largest and most recognized public liberal arts college and has received national recognition for academic excellence. In fact, the College is the academic heart of the University, offering fundamental disciplines on which all curricula rely. The College is the University's largest division, with approximately 7,000 undergraduate students and 1,100 graduate students.

The College has a strong program of student development and is recognized for the number of national awards received by students. These include Rhode Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships, Truman Scholarships, USA Today's All-USA Academic Team, Jacob K. Javits Fellowships and Ruth Lilly Fellowships. The College also has more than 30 active national honor society chapters.

It is the largest among the University's 12 divisions and employs 418 tenure-track faculty and 250 staff members. It supports personnel in 40 programs, occupying more than 25 campus buildings, with an annual budget of $75 million.

The College consists of 22 academic departments whose chairs and directors report directly to the Dean: African American Studies, American Studies, Anthropology, Art and Art History, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Communicative Disorders, Criminal Justice, English, Geography, Geological Sciences, History, Mathematics, Modern Languages and Classics, Music, New College, Philosophy, Physics and Astronomy, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, Theatre and Dance, and Woman's Studies. The College includes 14 doctoral programs and 25 master's programs.

Departments and programs in the College present more than 700 special lectures and events annually. Many are free and open to the public. These include main stage performances in the Gallaway Theatre, experimental plays in the Allan Bales Theatre, and Dance Alabama! performances in the Department of Theatre and Dance; the Celebrity Series, University Symphony Orchestra performances, and faculty recitals in the School of Music; the Bankhead Visiting Writers series in the Department of English, and a full season of exhibitions and art and art history visiting lecturers in the Sarah Moody Gallery in the Department of Art and Art History. Season schedules and tickets are available to faculty at reduced rates.
