| The Mission of the Department |
| |
The Department of History is central to the research, instructional,
and outreach missions of the University of Alabama. The study of history
is a fundamental component of the liberal arts education required
of all University of Alabama students.
Our particular scholarly mission is to preserve, advance, and communicate
knowledge of humanity's past. This mission is carried out through
a variety of means, including research, publication, teaching, and
service.
The Department of History is committed to being a recognized leader
in the advancement of historical scholarship. We embrace our role
in preparing future generations of scholars.
The Department is also committed to being a leader in the teaching
of history, both inside the university and through our many outreach
programs. We believe that a knowledge of history is necessary in order
to develop a humanistic approach to the problems of contemporary society
and that it is indispensable when preparing to meet the challenges
of the future. |
