Welcome to the History Department of the University of Alabama!
 

Our department consists of twenty-two full time faculty members specializing in a wide range of fields, including U. S. and Southern history, European history, Latin American history, Asian history, and military and naval history. We offer undergraduate and graduate courses in all of these areas, as well as graduate degrees from the M.A. to the Ph.D.

The Mission of the Department
 
The Department of History is central to the research, instructional, and outreach missions of the University of Alabama. The study of history is a fundamental component of the liberal arts education required of all University of Alabama students.

Our particular scholarly mission is to preserve, advance, and communicate knowledge of humanity's past. This mission is carried out through a variety of means, including research, publication, teaching, and service.

The Department of History is committed to being a recognized leader in the advancement of historical scholarship. We embrace our role in preparing future generations of scholars.

The Department is also committed to being a leader in the teaching of history, both inside the university and through our many outreach programs. We believe that a knowledge of history is necessary in order to develop a humanistic approach to the problems of contemporary society and that it is indispensable when preparing to meet the challenges of the future.
