    Research Interests:

  • Political ideologies of early China, centering on the philosophical idea of tianming (Heaven's Mandate) in Ban Gu's Hanshu.
  • Late-imperial Chinese intellectual history, especially in comparison to Western religio-philosophical trends.
  • Late-imperial imagistic and textual modes of cultural representation, Western vis-à-vis Chinese.
  • Catholic Orders in late-imperial China – Jesuits, Franciscans, Dominicans.
