Graduate Program

The Department of Geography at The University of Alabama has taken a leadership role in the state to prepare students with careers and advanced study in the discipline of geography. The department emphasizes four areas of concentration including (1) Physical Geography, (2) Regional, Environmental and Urban Planning, (3) Human Geography, and (4) Geographical Information Sciences. In addition, the department offers a GIS Certificate Program, that enables graduate students to acquire technical and analytical skills. These rapidly expanding fields prepare students to work in a broad range of positions with environmental consulting firms, private conservation and land management companies, federal/state/local government agencies, and educational institutions, as well as pursuing further academic study.

The Department offers a graduate program leading to the Master of Science degree. The Masters program requires either a minimum of 24 semester hours of graduate coursework plus a thesis, or a minimum of 36 semester hours of graduate coursework plus two non-thesis research papers. The program is designed for full-time students to complete their degrees in two years. The department also has a night program allowing part-time students to pursue their graduate degree in the evening.
