Exploration Marine Geophysics
Welcome to the Exploration Marine Geophysics Group!
What do we do?
The University of Alabama Marine Geophysics is charged with the study of numerous tectonically active regions throughout the Earth. Though the focus of the group is currently on a project related to the tectonic evolution of the Woodlark Basin in the southwest Pacific, other areas of interest include the Gulf of Corinth (Greece), the Red Sea, the northwest Australian margin, the Lau Basin, and the Mariana subduction system. The broad goal of this group is a greater understanding of extensional tectonics, the transition to seafloor spreading, and the early evolution of a sprerading center. A broad range of geophysical methods are employed, including reflection seismology, multi-beam bathymetry, sidescan, gravity, magnetics, earthquake seismology, heatflow, and even geology.
Who are we?
A number of graduate and undergraduate students are involved in marine geophysics reasearch here at the University of Alabama. The group is led by Andrew Goodliffe, Assistant Professor.
