The typical student seeking admission into this program would have a Master's in English, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, or TESOL.

An application for the Applied Linguistics degree should include:

-Data sheet

-Statement of purpose

-2 copies of all transcripts (including UA)

-Three letters of recommendation

-Proof of immunization

-Application fee.

See departmental requirements for GPA and entrance exam score. Whereas the Graduate School requires a TOEFL score of at least 550 for applicants whose first language is not English, the Applied Linguistics PhD concentration requires a higher score (see below).

Departmental requirements:

The English PhD requires :

-GRE score of at least 1500 total

-Sample of critical writing (20 pages)

-GPA of 3.5 or better on MA-level courses.

Applied Linguistics PhD concentration requirements :

-A TOEFL score of at least 600

-A TSE score or an audiotape with samples of informal and formal speech by the applicant.
