The mission of the Department of Communicative Disorders is consistent with the teaching, research, and service mission of the College of Arts and Sciences and the University of Alabama. The Department has dedicated itself to excellence in providing undergraduate and graduate students with educational, experiential and research opportunities in the study of human communication sciences and disorders. While enhancing the educational mission of the Department, the Speech and Hearing Center is further dedicated to reducing the impact of communicative disorders affecting diverse populations across the life-span.

The Department is committed to providing innovative teaching while exposing students to a wide array of technology to enhance their intellectual, professional, and personal growth. Academic and clinical experiences create a foundation for research, service and life-long learning.

The Department is committed to maintaining national accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation. The purpose of accreditation is to ensure that nationally established standards related to the quality of education and training have been met by academic programs. Accreditation is intended to protect the interests of students, benefit the public, and improve the quality of teaching, learning, research, and professional practice.

Standards of excellence have never held greater responsibility as scope of practice has expanded. The Department is committed to preparing professionals to meet the challenges of the future in this dynamic and continuously expanding field of study. The Department of Communicative Disorders embodies the mission of the College of Arts and Sciences and the University of Alabama.
