The University of Alabama is located in Tuscaloosa. The institution was established in 1831; its present enrollment is approximately 21,000 students. The Department of Art was formed in the late 1940’s and was initially housed in a single story building located in University Boulevard near what is now the university’s Student Health Center. One of the founding faculty members of the Art Department was the late Richard Zoellner, Professor of Printmaking. He was joined several years later by the late Dr. Joseph Bolt, Richard Brough, Professor of Design and Illustration, Angelo Granata, Professor Emeritus of Sculpture, and the late Frank Engle, Professor of Ceramics. The department is presently housed in Woods Hall and Garland Hall, two buildings of an architecturally historic, neo-Gothic quadrangle. Studio art courses are taught in Woods Hall and an adjacent complex that houses sculpture and ceramics, while Garland Hall provides space for departmental offices and art history. The 2.800 square-foot Sarah Moody Gallery of Art is located on the ground floor of Garland Hall and features year-round contemporary arts programming. It has a growing Permanent Collection dedicated primarily to contemporary works on paper, graphics and photography. The department has an annual enrollment of over 1,450 students with slightly more than 200 majors with approximately 25 students in the graduate studio art program. There are 13 full time faculty members in the studio art and art history areas.

The Department of Art offers undergraduate programs leading to the bachelor of arts degree and the bachelor of fine arts degree in studio art and the bachelor of arts degree in art history.
