Black Warrior Survey 2001

Volunteers Needed!!

The Black Warrior Survey of the University of Alabama Department of Anthropology was begun in the summer of 1999.  The goal of the project is generally to locate and record archaeological sites within two three-mile wide survey transects.  More specifically, the project’s focus is to provide a more complete understanding of the Moundville settlement pattern.  Although the Moundville site itself, as well as the single-mound Mississippian sites are generally well understood, much less is known about Moundville-related farmstead sites.  The survey’s aim is to locate and record as many of these sites as possible.  Of particular interest are the geomorphological characteristics of the site locations.

During the 2000 field season, a total of 44 sites were recorded and several previously recorded sites were revisited.  Of those 44 sites, 26 sites contained shell-tempered pottery, and are thus potential farmsteads.

Although the project is supported financially by the Alabama Historical Commission, only the field director and assistant (both UA graduate students) are funded.  All other crew members are volunteers.  Volunteers need-not be affiliated with the University or have any archaeological experience.  Also, volunteers are not obligated to work everyday (although if anyone would like to do so, it would be greatly appreciated!).

This summer’s field season will begin on May 14th and end on July 6th, and run Monday through Friday and some Saturdays.  Anyone with questions or interest in participating should contact Jennifer via e-mail at myer001@bama.ua.edu.
