It is the mission of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Alabama:

  1. To educate the general student population in those rudiments of anthropology essential for getting beyond an ethnocentric understanding of the history, nature, and functioning of ancient and modern societies.
  2. To train undergraduate majors in the broad content and perspectives of the discipline while preparing them to enter the job market or pursue graduate studies.
  3. To prepare graduate students with a broad understanding of the discipline, in-depth knowledge of at least one sub-discipline, and detailed comprehension of the research process in Anthropology.
  4. To produce original research of such quality, especially in the fields of archaeology and medical anthropology, that the national stature of the department is enhanced.
  5. To fully participate in the activities of academic citizenship at the department, college, university, regional, and national level.
