Anthropology at UA
The Department of Anthropology of the College of Arts and Sciences is housed in Marten ten Hoor Hall on the southeastern edge of the main campus of The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa (Anthropology Department Location Map). The metropolitan area of Tuscaloosa has a population of about 150,000. The average annual temperature is 64 degrees, with a low of 47 degrees in January, and a high of 82 degrees in July. Annual average rainfall is 54 inches. Greater Tuscaloosa County sits at the interface of three physiographic provinces: the Appalachian Plateau, Southern Appalachian Mountains, and the Gulf Coastal Plain. West Alabama enjoys a pleasantly diverse topography of rolling wooded hills, alluvial plains, and level plateaus well watered by rivers, streams, and lakes.
There are numerous cultural and recreational events and facilities available to students at the University of Alabama. On campus recreational opportunities consist of several swimming pools including the indoor Olympic pool at the University Aquatic Center, as well as the indoor running track, basketball and racquetball courts, and exercise equipment at the Student Recreation Center, among other options. The university has a splendid Music Department, and the faculty and visiting musicians frequently give performances in the state of the art Moody Music Building. There are many off campus enjoyments also, including several museums, both locally and in Birmingham (a 60 minute drive by Interstate), and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery (a two hour drive).
