Humanities Foundation:
1998 SUPER Summer Institutes
People and Place: Meaning and Myth
"Seldom does a teacher get both the practical and inspirational. SUPER was such an experience for me .I came away with new ideas, new materials, new friends and new academic energy." Mary Hubbard, history teacher, Jefferson County International Baccalaureate
For nearly eight years Alabamas history, literature, geography and foreign language teachers have journeyed across space and time, courtesy of the AHFs SUPER (School and University Partners for Educational Renewal). Summer institutes and school-year workshops, led by humanities scholars from throughout Alabama and beyond, have expanded more than 1,000 teachers knowledge of Eastern and Western Europe, the Amazon region, the Middle East, Africa, East Asia, South and Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean. SUPER has literally widened geographic vistas and deepened cross-cultural understanding among teachers. Now in 1998 SUPER returns to the South and Alabama with People and Place: Meaning and Myth. In the five institutes participants will explore cultural and individual diversity as they examine how place shapes individual and group perspectives, attitudes, and cultures.
SUPER Institutes are intensive one and two-week summer residential programs held on college campuses around the state and facilitated by noted scholars. Limited openings are available in all five summer institutes. While each institute has a particular emphasis, e.g. literature or history, all are interdisciplinary.
All SUPER Summer Institute participants will receive content renewal, interaction with noted scholars, as well as writing and Internet instruction. Teachers will also be given continuing education credits, books, and other resource materials to take back to the classroom.
This web site describes and provides resources for only one of five institutes. For information about the others please consult the web site of the Alabama Humanities Foundation or contact Becky Hairelson (email: bhairelson@ahf.net) or Rebecca Stafford (email: rstafford@ahf.net) at 205.930.0540 (phone) or 205.930.0986 (fax).

This institute brings together a team of Asian scholars to guide the participating teachers through an exciting menu of myths and folk tales focused on Asia particularly India, Southeast Asia, China, Korea, and Japan. The goal of this institute is to provide secondary educators with a comprehensive understanding of Asian myths and folk tales, suitable textual materials for use in the classes, and some appropriate visual aids to enhance the introduction of such matters to Alabama students.
Any 7th - 12th grade language arts, social studies, or foreign language teacher currently teaching in an accredited Alabama public or private school is eligible to apply. All costs associated with SUPER Institutes are paid for by the Alabama Humanities Foundation, and a stipend will be awarded to each SUPER Summer Institute participant. A refundable deposit will be required with application. DEADLINE IS EXTENDED UNTIL ALL SPACES ARE FULL APPLY TODAY!
To apply simply copy, complete, and send in the application appended at the end of this web page or contact Becky Hairelson or Rebecca Stafford at 205.930.0540 (phone) or 205.930.0986 (fax).
